Surnommée la « Reine du roman jeunesse », Edith Nesbit (également connue sous le nom de E. Nesbit), était une écrivaine britannique du début du xxe siècle qui révolutionna la littérature. Elle est souvent citée comme étant la première autrice jeunesse moderne, ainsi que celle qui a inventé le roman fantastique moderne. Outre sa carrière littéraire, E. Nesbit était une militante socialiste engagée : elle fut la co-fondatrice du Fabian Society, le précurseur du Parti travailliste. Ses convictions socialistes se reflétaient souvent dans ses histoires, où elle abordait des thèmes tels que l’égalité, la justice sociale et l’empathie envers les classes défavorisées. Nesbit a influencé les plus grands auteurs pour la jeunesse de nos jours, tels que J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis et J.R.R. Tolkien, et ses romans sont des best-sellers mondiaux ; pourtant, Nesbit demeure méconnue en France.
