The incredible success of the essay was partly thanks to its author, Stéphane Hessel, a former resistance fighter with an illustrious career. He was born in Germany in 1917 and was made a French citizen in 1937, after which he became a resistance fighter during the Second World War. He survived a German concentration camp and went on to become a diplomat. He died in 2013 at the age of 95.
