Il naquit à Stratford-sur-Avon en 1564, d'un père gantier qui épousa Mary Arden, une bourgeoise qui mit la famille à l'abri du besoin. Le jeune William fréquenta la grammar-school de Stratford, où l'on enseignait le latin puis se maria à l'âge de 18 ans avec Anne Hathaway. Il partit ensuite pour Londres où une carrière de dramaturge l'attendait ; il rentrera 20 ans plus tard dans sa ville natale pour y mourir peu de temps après laissant derrière lui ses écrits légendaires.
