Né à Skien en 1828, Henrik Ibsen écrit sa première tragédie à l'âge de vingt-et-un ans. Après avoir connu des débuts difficiles, il quitte la Norvège en 1864 et voyage dans de nombreux pays d'Europe. De retour vingt-sept ans plus tard dans son pays natal, il reçoit une consécration nationale. Il meurt à Christiana en 1906.
