‘Facing the Flag’ is one of the stories that cemented Verne’s reputation as one of the pioneers of science-fiction. It centres around a brilliant scientist, Thomas Roch, who has invented the ultimate weapon, known as ‘The Fulgurator.’ However, when his creation is refused by every government on Earth, Roch’s sanity begins to crumble. Interning him to a mental health facility ought to be the end of the tale. However, Verne throws in some twists and turns, a liberal sprinkling of pirates, and an underground lair that wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond film. A prescient book, many of Verne’s predictions, in terms of technology and moral scruples, have come to pass.Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist who became known as the ‘Father of Science Fiction.’ He wrote more than 60 novels, including ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ (1864), ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ (1870) which was also released as a film, starring James Mason, and ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ (1873), which has been released as a TV drama, featuring former Dr Who star, David Tennant.

Jules Verne, né en 1828, mourut en 1905. Il fit ses études de droit, mais se passionna surtout pour les découvertes scientifiques et les voyages. Ses premiers écrits furent des pièces; toutefois, son rêve était de créer le Roman de la science, genre qu'il inventa en effet avec Cinq semaines en ballon (1864); De la terre à la lune (1865); Les enfants du capitaine Grant (1867-68); Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1870); Le tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours (1873); L'île mystérieuse, etc. Enfant, il adorait les aventures maritimes ; à sept ans, apprenant l'invention du télégraphe, il écrit sa première lettre pour en réclamer un. Il devait devenir avoué, il se fera écrivain, marin sur son yacht à vapeur et se passionnera pour toutes les découvertes scientifiques de son temps. Il n'aura le succès dont il rêvait que cinquante ans après sa mort. Il disait : « Je travaille, et si mes œuvres n'ont pas un résultat prochain, j'attendrai !»

I began this journey a few years ago as a medium. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that would lead me to be able to hear G-D, Jesus and some Arch Angels. I started getting messages that I needed to go out on the beach at sunrise, and to bring my tablet, more commonly known as a notebook. I would walk up and down the beach thinking I would see something like the burning bush, but that didnt happen. It couldnt be as simple as that. I needed to sit down with my tablet and start writing what I heard. I soon realized I was going to have to work hard for this. Almost every morning I would sit down either at the beach or later in my house, to listen to the great spirits tell me their wisdom. It would take a full year to put together this book. I asked G-D why me? Im not a bible scholar or anyone of great importance. Im just an average housewife and mother. He told me the meek shall inherent the earth.Dori Green Morris
