Susan Coolidge est le nom de plume de Sarah Chauncey Woolsey, écrivaine principalement connue pour son classique What Katy Did (Katy Carr). Après une carrière d’infirmière pendant la Guerre de Secession, elle se met à écrire, s’inspirant de ses quatre sœurs et frères. Son roman rencontre un grand succès, grâce à la mise en avant d’un univers rural et la représentation réaliste des enfants. Il continue à être très populaire de nos jours, faisant l’objet de plusieurs adaptations à l’écran. Il est également apprécié des critiques féministes qui considèrent Katy Carr comme un des premiers personnages féministes dans la littérature jeunesse.
