Dr. Giacomo Rappaccini is a scientist who grows poisonous plants in his garden. Nathaniel Hawthorne naquit dans le Massachusetts en 1804. Il reçut une éducation puritaine qu'il ne renia jamais et qui marqua beaucoup son oeuvre. Sa conception pessimiste de la nature humaine commande la psychologie de tous ses romans. Quant à ses personnages, ils vivent de tragiques et douloureux dilemnes. Se défiant des hommes, Hawthorne se plaisait dans la solitude. Et c'est en pleine campagne, dans l'isolement de maisons paysannes, qi'il aimait à écrire. Il composa ainsi les deux livres qui le placèrent au premier rang des romanciers américains : La Lettre écarlate et La Maison aux sept pignons. Le recueil des Contes du Bois Touffu (titre original : Tanglewood Tales), paru en 1853, contient l'adaptation de cinq récits de la mythologie grecque. Le Minotaure est l'un d'entre eux. Le livre connut un immense succès auprès du public anglo-saxon car il est captivant et fort bien écrit. Nathaniel Hawthorne voulait rendre l'imagination enfantine sensible aux légendes antiques. Ses propres enfants furent ses premiers lecteurs. L'écrivain reconnaît avoir eu pour but de substituer un ton gothique ou romantique à la froideur classique. Hawthone mourut à Plymouth en 1864.
